One of the reasons that omega 3 fatty acids are associated with an lowered risk of cancer is that they have an anti-inflammatory effect on the body. Without knowing too much into the science of this, it appears that the levels of EPA as a percentage of the total fatty acids in the bodies of non-cancer patients was 0.6%, compared to 0.7% in men with prostate cancer.

These are clinically insignificant numbers, but what’s really important is the ratio of AA/EPA, which decreases the amount of inflammation in the body as the AA/EPA ratio decreases. One of the interesting facts that will immediately demonstrate how inappropriate the scaremongering around fatty acids actually was data around Japanese men.

Japanese men have an extremely low AA/EPA ratio, and when it was decreased even further by supplementation of omega 3 fatty acids, they experienced a reduction in heart attacks by 20% with no increase in any type of cancer.
